World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th June each year and is the biggest international day for the environment with millions of people from across the world engaging to protect the planet. 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the event and the theme is ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution’, a cause very close to our hearts.
Here at Hurawalhi we take our responsibility for reducing the use of plastics very seriously and, thanks to our desalination plant, we provide drinking water in reusable glass bottles, instead of importing it in plastic bottles. We say no to plastic where straws are concerned, instead we ask our guests if they would like a straw with their drink, and if they would, it is a paper straw. A partnership we are particularly proud of is that with the Maldives’ branch of Parley for the Oceans that advocate avoiding the use of single-use plastics and encouraging responsible disposal of plastic that would otherwise end up in the ocean. Whenever possible, we follow Parley’s guidelines of avoiding, intercepting, and redesigning the standards for plastic pollution. Recyclable waste as well as any plastic debris washed onto our beaches is regularly collected by Parley to ensure that it is treated as environmentally responsible as possible.
The health of the environment is very important to Hurawalhi Maldives and our sustainable approach demonstrates that even luxury holidays can tread lightly on the environment. In addition to our commitment to finding solutions to plastic pollution, we have an entire collection of environmentally friendly initiatives which combine to reduce our footprint on nature including line drying laundry and harnessing the sun’s energy with solar panels. During your stay with us, enjoy produce from our organic garden, linger in a hot shower heated at no cost to the environment and ask our marine biologist about the thriving coral nursery project or even join them for a tour of the reefs where you can swim with sea turtles and countless other species.
Your time spent at our resort will see you enveloped in luxury, just as the brochures promise, but you will also be cocooned in nature, the beauty of the natural flora of the island is stunning and those who venture underwater will be enchanted at the sights they will see. Be prepared for your heart to be captured, once you’ve spent time here you’ll want to join us is striving for not only sustainability but also restoration of nature in as many areas of the planet as possible. We have ‘Only One Earth’, enjoy it, respect it and protect it together with Hurawalhi.
