Hurawalhi’s Chic Bucket List: Dolphin Safari
Everybody loves dolphins. These social, playful mammals continue to amaze scientists with their amazing abilities, and at Hurawalhi we consider ourselves lucky to regularly spot large pods of them. Showing off their charm and impressing our guests with their acrobatics, dolphins inevitably deserve your attention during your holiday at the resort.
Often seen as close as on the house reef just off the Ocean Villas, or from Coco Bar and Canneli restaurant decks (how’s that for a breakfast view!), dolphins are regular visitors to the waters surrounding the resort; they seem to enjoy the quality of fish, squid and crustaceans at their disposal in the channels between nearby reefs, as well as our environmentally responsible tourism practices.
While almost a dozen of species of dolphins are said to reside in the Maldives, we most commonly get to admire the playful spinner dolphins, which are one of the most social species and also known for their fantastic jumps, flips and spins. Not only is spinning their trademark and a method for removing parasites, but each splash is thought to mean something different – anything from Let’s move!, Danger! to (as we like to think) Step on the gas, captain! You’ll love it how they surf the waves behind the boat and react to the crew’s clapping!
Keep your eyes peeled during your meals, when relaxing by the pool or during your walks around the island; for the best chance we encourage you to join one of the several speedboat or jet ski excursions that make it dolphin-spotting extra fun.
